Mary Kom, a six-time World Champion announced her retirement from boxing due to age restrictions. As per the rules of the International Boxing Association male and female boxers are allowed to fight in elite-level competitions only till the age of 40. Since Mary Kom is now 41 years old, she will have to hang up her boots.
At an event, she admitted that though she still has the spirit to compete, unfortunately due to the age limit, she is unable to compete in any event.
Mary Kom is the first female boxer in history to have won six world titles. She became the first Indian to win a gold medal at the AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships. She won the World Championship titles in 2005, 2006, 2008, 2010 and later clinched the Olympic gold medal in 2012. In between, she took short breaks to give birth to her 3 children.
