Indian-American mathematician wins International Statistics award

Calyampudi Radhakrishna Rao, a famous Indian-American mathematician and statistician will receive the 2023 International Statistics award for his work done 75 years ago that revolutionised statistical thinking.


CR Rao is currently 102 years old. This award is said to be equivalent to the Nobel Prize in the field. He will receive USD 80,000 in July at the biennial International Statistical Institute World Statistics Congress in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.
Guy Nason, Chairperson of the International Prize in Statistics Foundation said that the monumental work done by CR Rao ”not only revolutionized statistical thinking but also continues to exert enormous influence on human understanding of science across a wide spectrum of disciplines.”
CR Rao was born in a Telugu family in Hadagali, Karnataka. He completed his education in Andhra and Calcutta before obtaining a PhD from Cambridge University. He is currently a professor emeritus at Pennsylvania State University and Research Professor at the University of Buffalo.
