He was the lone survivor of the fatal chopper crash that killed General Rawat and his wife along with 11 others
Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat and his wife, Madhulika Rawat were killed in a chopper crash in Tamil Nadu on December 8th 2021. Eleven others present in the helicopter also met with a tragic end and the only person who survived was Group Captain Varun Singh. Inspite of sustaining serious injuries, he was airlifted to Command Hospital in Bangalore in order to administer best treatment. Unfortunately, he passed away early this morning.
Defence Minister, Rajnath Singh tweeted, “Pained beyond words to learn of the demise of IAF pilot, Group Captain Varun Singh. He was a true fighter who fought till his last breath. My thoughts and deepest condolences are with his family and friends. We stand firmly with the family, in this hour of grief.”
He was conferred the Shaurya Chakra in August for averting a mid air accident of the Tejas combat aircraft. He was a Braveheart who hailed from a family of soldiers, his father Col. (retired) KP Singh being in the Army Air defence, brother in the Navy and Varun himself being a part of the Air Force. He is survived by his wife, son and daughter.
