India becomes member of United Nations ECOSOC

In a significant development, India has been elected as a member of the Commission on Status of Women (CSW), a body of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) of the United Nations for a period of 4 years from 2021-2025.
Three countries India, China and Afghanistan had contested the elections and the seat was won by India. The Commission on Status of Women was established in June 1946 and comprises of 45 members. The body promotes the rights of women, highlights the reality of women’s lives throughout the world and helps in shaping standards on gender equality and empowerment of women.
