An Indian American economist Gita Gopinath has the honour of becoming the first woman to occupy the post of Chief Economist of the International Monetary Fund. The 47 year old woman suceeds Maurice Obstfeld who retired on December 31st.
The Mysore born American citizen has been described as ” one of the world’s outstanding economists with impeccable academic credentials, a proven track record of intellectual leadership and extensive international experience.” Gita said that it’s an honour for her to become the first woman to occupy the position and she is said to be a role model for women around the world.
