ISRO’s lady robot ‘Vyom Mitra’ is scheduled to travel to space either later this year or early next year as part of the ‘Gaganyaan’ programme. Vyom means heaven in Sanskrit and Mitra means friend. It was designed at the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), Thiruvananthapuram.
The robot will mimic all activities of the Indian astronauts including some simple experiments during the journey into space and back. The lady robot was the centre of attraction at the inaugural session of the three day international meet titled “Human Spaceflight and Exploration- Present Challenges and Future Trends” held at Bengaluru. Vyom Mitra the first woman astronaut of ISRO has no legs and her body stops with the torso. She will simulate the human functions required for space before real astronauts take off before August 2022.
