The Tamilnadu Uniformed Services Recruitment Board (TNUSRB) was directed by the Madras High Court to frame guidelines for the benefit of women candidates who are not in a position to compete with others in the recruitment process due to pregnancy or other issues such as menstruation.
Justice Vimala issued the direction two days before her retirement. She allowed a writ petition filed by R Devika who was denied job of a grade II Police Constable last year because she took 0. 30 seconds more to complete 100m sprint in the allotted time of 17. 50 seconds . The judge said that it was unfair to expect a pregnant woman to compete with other women and directed the board to frame guidelines for the benefit of women in future recruitments .She said that pregnancy and childbirth should not be considered as impediments for discharge of duties.
