Researchers have found that people who spend more time on social media especially WhatsApp will have higher self esteem and feel less lonely. The research was conducted by Edge Hill University in the U.K. They found that text based messaging had a positive impact on psychological well being.
Dr. Linda Kaye of the University said that the more time people spent on WhatsApp, it added to their social competence and boosted their self esteem. Two hundred users out of which 159 were women and the remaining were men with an average age of 24 participated in the study that was published in the International Journal of Human Computer Studies. It was found that on an average, people used WhatsApp for about 55 minutes a day and was used mainly to connect with close friends and group chats. It led to favourable results on the users well being.
