International Monetary Fund chief economist Gita Gopinath will leave her post and will be returning to the economics department of Harvard University in January.
Gita currently heads the research department of the IMF that produces the quarterly World Economic Outlook report. She made history by becoming the first woman to serve in this top post. Gita has made significant contributions to the Fund . Her key role was to set up global vaccination targets to end the Covid-19 pandemic. She also helped to set up a Climate Change team to analyze optimal climate mitigation policies.
Gita was appointed in October 2018 and Harvard University granted her 3 years of leave and permitted her to serve at the IMF for those 3 years.
IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva praised Gita Gopinath’s work and contribution to the Fund. A search for her replacement will begin shortly.
