Former Prime Minister and veteran leader of the Congress party, late PV Narasimha Rao will be conferred with the Bharat Ratna award. It is the highest civilian award in the country. He was a six time Member of Parliament who passed away at the age of 83 in 2004.
This award was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He stated that former Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao was a distinguished scholar and a statesman who served the country in various capacities.
He was born on June 28th, 1921 in Karimnagar, Telangana into an agricultural family. He became an advocate and later joined politics. He served in various capacities including Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh. He brought about many economic reforms in the country, especially the dismantling of the License Raj. It was he who appointed Manmohan Singh as Finance Minister and brought about several economic reforms to pull out the country from an economic crisis.
