Photos of school children travelling on footboard and hanging from window frames were published in a couple of newspapers. The Madras High Court took serious note of it and the first Division Bench of Chief Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice M Sundar directed the registry to take up the case of unsafe travel by school children as a suo moto public interest litigation.
The Chief Justice wanted to know why the State Government was not operating special buses for the children. The State Transport Corporations were also asked to take a call on this issue. They would be directed to operate special buses for school children and thereby enable them to travel safely.
