First woman to reach the deepest ocean spot

Astronaut Kathy Sullivan 68 years of age has become the first woman to reach the deepest spot in the ocean. Kathy who is both an astronaut and an oceanographer emerged from her 35,810 feet dive into the Challenger Deep a few days ago. She has the credit of being the first person to both walk in space as well as descend to the deepest spot in the ocean.
Dr. Sullivan joined NASA in 1978 as part of the first group of women astronauts. On 11th October 1984, she became the first American woman to walk in space. She later became the Administrator of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. She was always fascinated with the ocean and even before she became an astronaut, she participated in one of the first attempts to use a submersible to study the volcanic processes that make the ocean crust.
