T.S.Kanaka who has the distinction of being Asia’s first woman neurosurgeon passed away after a brief illness at the age of 86. She inspired many women in India to take to the field of neurosurgery. She also has the distinction of being the third woman neurosurgeon in the world.
She also served in the Army as a medical officer for a couple of years during the Indo-China war. Dr. Kanaka retired as professor of Neurosurgery at the Institute of Neurosurgery at the Madras Medical College in 1990. After her retirement, she planned to serve the poor and the needy and set up Sri Santhana Krishna Padmavathi Health Care and Research Foundation in Chromepet with her retirement benefits.
