A man from Mukkom village in Kozhikode was arrested for allegedly divorcing his wife through instant triple talaq. A warrant was issued by the Thamarassery Judicial First Class Magistrate and the arrest was made by the Mukkom police. It was the first arrest made after the Parliament passed a law banning the practice of triple talaq.
The suspect was identified as E.K. Usam and he was charged under section 3 of the Muslim Women ( Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act. As per the Act, any Muslim husband who pronounces instant triple talaq shall be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to three years and shall also be liable to pay fine.
