Former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi have been sentenced to 14 years of rigorous imprisonment in the Toshakhana case. This verdict came just a week before national elections.
Imran married Bushra Bibi in 2018 months before he was elected prime minister. Imran has also been convicted in the cipher case for leaking state documents. He was accused of exposing state secrets by waving a confidential document, the cipher, at a public rally on March 27, 2022. This document is said to be a diplomatic correspondence between the Pakistani ambassador to Washington and the foreign ministry in Islamabad.
A no-confidence motion was passed against him in April 2022 and he is currently serving a sentence in the Rawalpindi jail. There are around 150 cases pending against him.
Imran Khan has alleged that these cases against him were just a plot to sideline him ahead of the election.
