Due to the bomb attacks on churches and hotels, the Sri Lankan Government has declared emergency. It has blamed militants with foreign links for the attack which killed 300 people and injured about 500 people. The emergency law gives police and the military powers to detain and interrogate suspects without court orders.

No one has claimed responsibility for the blasts but suspicion was focusing on Islamic militants in the Buddhist majority country. Seven suicide bombers took part in the attacks. The police had received a tip off of a possible attack on churches by a little known Islamic group this month. It is unclear as to what action was taken based on the tip off.  Investigations are on and so far 24 people have been arrested.
