Ummul Khair, a 33 year old disability rights lawyer was confined to her home for the first 17 years of her life due to cerebral palsy. However this lady with an iron will, left her home in Bengaluru and travelled to Chennai with the help of Vidya Sagar, a non governmental organization which worked with people with disability. She managed to finish her school education, through NIOS ,got a degree in Sociology and also acquired a law degree from the Dr Ambedkar Law College in Chennai.After fighting against all odds, today she is a lawyer for person’s with disability and fights for their causes.
She is working to create employment, education, footpaths, toilets and parks accessible to persons with disabilities. Her efforts have brought her recognition. She has been chosen for the Helen Keller Award instituted by Mindtree and the National Centre for Promotion of Employment for Disabled People. She is the only one from South India to win the award this year. The award will be presented to her in New Delhi on December 2nd, the eve of the International Day for Persons with Disability.
