Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia handed over the first caste certificate to a child of a single mother based on the mother’s credentials.
Earlier, caste certificates were issued based on the father’s caste certificate or paternal side certificates. This is the first time that a child belonging to the scheduled caste community received a caste certificate based on his mother’s caste certificate.
Due to the earlier procedure, many single mothers were not able to get SC/ST caste certificates for their children. It was Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Vishesh Ravi who took up this issue and followed it up with the concerned departments viz the Revenue Department, Social Welfare Department and the Department for the Welfare of SC/ST of Delhi.
