The Madras High Court has held that it is a duty of a father to maintain his daughter not only till she attained majority but till she gets married and settles down with her husband. Justice P. Velmurugan made this observation while dismissing a Revision Petition filed by an individual challenging the direction passed by the Magistrate directing him to pay Rs 8, 000 per month for the maintenance of his minor daughter who was residing with his estranged wife.
The court said that as a dutiful father, he is bound to maintain his daughter still marriage. Taking into consideration the cost of living as prevalent on this date the award of Rs 8000 per month is a very reasonable amount. The judge further observed that no father should be allowed to shy away from accepting his liability of maintaining his minor children who are not in a position to take care of themselves.
