A Dalit woman converted to Hinduism and claimed benefit of reservation. The Madras High Court upheld her plea and said that she could enjoy the benefits of reservation if she followed Hindu customs after conversion to Hinduism. The woman was originally a Christian named Daisy Flora.
She converted and changed her name to Megalai and married a Hindu Dalit. The Teacher Recruitment Board denied her the post of Junior Grade Assistant saying that her conversion for marrying a Hindu was not valid. The woman approached the High Court which held that her selection and appointment is not to be disturbed on the ground of her communal status as she had been continuously following Hindu customs upon conversion.
