Police have arrested Tapas Ghosh for cheating Muktha Bobde the mother of Chief Justice of India, Justice Sharad Bobde to the tune of around Rs 2.50 crore. The Commissioner of Police, Nagpur, Amitesh Kumar has confirmed this and stated that the investigation of the matter has been handed over to the economic offences wing of the Nagpur city police. The Bobde family owns Seasons Lawn at Akashwani Square in Civil Lines. The lawn was rented out for outdoor events and celebrations like weddings, receptions, and other functions. Tapas Ghosh was appointed as the caretaker of the lawn about 13 years ago on a monthly remuneration of Rs9,000.
He was also given an incentive of Rs 2,500 for every booking of the lawn. Ghosh and his wife, taking full advantage of Muktha Bobde’s old age, started cheating on her. They did not deposit all the amounts that they collected from renting out the lawn. The incident came to light when many people who had booked the lawn for functions, cancelled the same due to the ongoing pandemic, and sought refund of the amount paid by them. As Ghosh failed to refund the amounts, they approached Bobde’s mother. An inquiry was conducted and it was found that Ghosh did not deposit the amounts collected from renting of the lawn for the past two and a half years. It was found that the embezzled amount totalled to around Rs 2.50 crore. He had also not maintained the receipt books properly. A case was registered against Ghosh and his wife under various sections of the IPC. The Sitabuldi police have arrested Ghosh and produced him before a court and have obtained his remand till December 16th. Though his wife has been named as the co-accused, she has not been arrested yet. No recovery has been made so far in spite of search operations conducted at Ghosh’s house.
