A 19 year old college student has donated part of her liver to her father who was suffering from end stage liver disease. Her father was waiting for transplantation under the deceased donor programme. However his health condition deteriorated and his daughter volunteered to donate a part of her liver.
Her family was worried about the repercussions of the surgery like the long period of recovery, wound related complications, pain, hernia, her marriage prospects etc. The right half of her liver was separated in 3 and 1/2 hours and liver resection was done in a bloodless manner. The surgery was done successfully facilitating healing without stitches. The recipient team of doctors performed the liver transplant on the patient who was discharged on the third day. Both father and daughter are doing well.
