A female astronaut Christina Koch plans to create a new spaceflight record by remaining in space for 328 days. She completed the space walk with a male colleague instead of a female colleague last month. The 40 year old woman has been in orbit since last month and is part of NASA’s study of the effects of long spaceflights on the human body.

At the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, Expedition 59 crewmember Christina Koch of NASA undergoes a Sokol launch suit pressure check Feb. 27 during pre-launch training. Koch, Nick Hague of NASA and Alexey Ovchinin of Roscosmos will launch March 14, U.S. time, on the Soyuz MS-12 spacecraft from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan for a six-and-a-half month mission on the International Space Station. In March what would have been the first all female space walk with astronaut Anne McClain, due to lack of a space suit in the right size for Anne, the space walk was done by Koch and a male colleague instead. As of now astronaut Peggy Watson holds the record for the longest spaceflight by a woman staying in orbit for 288 days. Koch says that it’s an honour to follow in Peggy’s footsteps.
