The city of Chennai has been facing a lot of challenges since the imposition of the lockdown. First it was the Koyambedu market cluster, now the returnees from other countries as well as other parts of the country are posing new challenges. A committee of experts will be meeting Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami to recommend the lifting of the lockdown with certain restrictions.
The first case in Chennai was detected on March 18 and as on date, there are 11,131 positive cases in the city. According to Jayaprakash Muliyil, the Senior Epidemiologist in the Scientific Advisory Committee of the National Institute of Epidemiology, the virus cannot be eradicated and therefore the best thing to do would be to open up and protect the vulnerable. Salons and public transport will be opened. However, malls, places of worship and educational institutions will be closed for some more time.
