One of the heritage structures of Chennai, the Central Station has been declared a ‘green station’ by the Indian Green Building Council. The General Manager of Southern Railway confirmed the certification.
Chennai Central along with New Delhi, Varanasi and a few other stations were identified for green certification on a pilot basis in 2017. The authorities of the Railway Division in Chennai fitted 3,500 LED lights, designed a solid waste disposal plant, installed a solar power generator and fixed transparent roofs to reduce carbon footprint to make the heritage station get a green certification. They also began using recyled water for cleaning station interiors and trains. All this plus increasing awareness among railway staff, improving accessibility to stations and making the station disabled friendly helped the station to get a feather in its cap.
