For Malayalam Film Industry, 2015 can be best summed up as the year noted for its musical highs. Since Malayalees adore melodies to their core, it was not surprising that the majority of the songs that got composed fell in that genre. The audience was spoilt with a sheer variety of mesmerizing tunes through movies such as Mili, Su.. Su… Sudhi Vathmeekam, Ennu Ninte Moideen, You Too Brutus, Nee-Na (which even had English tracks), Rani Padmini, Chandrattan Evideya, Oru Vadakkan Selfie, Premam, Ennum Eppozhum etc., to name a few.
However, a history was in the making on December 7th, when the songs of the much awaited Dulquer Salmaan and Parvathy starrer Charlie were officially released on YouTube by the music label Muzik247. It was the day when Gopi Sunder’s compositions for the movie captivated the listeners to such an extent that the jukebox received 1 Lakh views in just 24 hours! The fact that the songs had no visuals accompanied with them, but still managed to go viral with the audio alone – testifies the immenseness of the pull that Gopi Sunder’s tracks had on the audience, making it a rarest of the rarest feat for the Malayalam film industry. No other Malayalam movie preparing for its release can boast about achieving 6 lakh views for the soundtracks in a span of only two weeks.
There is high amount of freshness and novel blending of vocals in Charlie’s album. An eclectic bunch of eminent singers such as Maalgudi Shubha, Shakthishree Gopalan, Md. Maqbool Mansoor, Vijay Yesudas, Shreya Goshal, Vijay Prakash, Rajalakshmi and Divya S Menon has come together for the movie’s music. The album is also supreme in its lyrics department with Rafeeq Ahammed penning all the songs, except one (Chithirathira), which is written by Santhosh Varma.
