The life-threatening fungal infection attacks those with weak immune systems
Black Fungus or mucormycosis has been found in many patients recovering from Covid 19 and in Kerala almost nine patients are under treatment for the life threatening disease. The disease has been declared as an epidemic in states like Tamil Nadu, Odisha, Gujarat, Telangana and Rajasthan where cases are rising and deaths have been reported. Patients with high blood sugar and those who are on immunosuppressants and steroids are at higher risk of contracting the disease. The fungus is present in the air and attacks mostly those whose immune systems are compromised.
“Three factors are very important- good control of blood sugar levels, those on steroids must monitor blood sugar levels regularly, and be careful about when to give steroids and their dosage,” news agency ANI quoted AIIMS director Randeep Guleria. According to studies, the disease has a 50% mortality rate and can cause severe damage to patients even causing death if not treated on time. The symptoms include a black crusting around the nasal area, headache , fever, sinus congestion, blurred vision and swelling around the areas and forehead.
