The Supreme Court directed the government of Gujarat to provide Bilkis Bano with the compensation amount of Rs 50 lakhs, a job and an accommodation within a period of two weeks. Bilkis Bano was gang raped when she was five months pregnant during the 2002 riots in Gujarat.
A bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi while hearing a contempt petition filed by Bilkis, asked the government as to why the compensation was not yet paid as per the earlier order of the court. The Solicitor General appearing for the government said that State would like to file a plea seeking review of the order of the Supreme Court. The Chief Justice then said that the compensation amount was fixed taking into consideration the peculiar facts of the case. It was then that the Solicitor General, agreed to this and gave an undertaking to the court that the compensation, job and accommodation would be provided to Bilkis within two weeks. The court further gave Bilkis the liberty to approach it in case of any difficulty while disposing her contempt petition.
