A women’s doubles team from Japan and Indonesia were disqualified from the French Open after a ball hit by one of the players between points hit a ball girl. The doubles pair of Miyu Kato and Aldila Sutjiadi were playing against Czech Republic’s Marie Bouzkova and Spain’s Sara Sorribes Tormo when the incident took place.
Kato sent a cross-court ball towards the ball girl between points in the third round when the ball hit the shoulder of the ball girl and left her shaken and in great pain. Though Kato was initially given a warning by the umpire, after protests by their opponents, the pair were disqualified.
Kato apologised to the ball girl on Twitter and said that it was totally unintentional. Though Kato and her team mate Aldila pleaded before the French Open officials that it was an accident, they were still disqualified.
