Arnab Goswami, the editor-in-chief of Republic TV has moved the Supreme Court seeking to stay the FIRs registered against him in various states for his hate speeches and for defamation of Congress leader Sonia Gandhi.
The case will be heard by a Division Bench comprising of Justice D.Y. Chandrachud and Justice M.R. Shah. Five states-Maharastra, Telangana, Madhya Pradesh, Chattisgarh and the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir have filed FIRs against him. Arnab’s prayer was that no coercive measures should be taken against him as any action would amount to curbing of freedom of speech and freedom of the press granted under Section 19 (1) (a) of the Constitution.
