Kiren Rijiju has been removed from his post as Union Law Minister and has been moved to a relatively low-key Ministry of Earth Sciences. Arjun Ram Meghwal, Minister of State in charge of Parliamentary Affairs has been appointed as the new Law Minister.
He will have independent charge of the Law Ministry and is the first time in recent history that the Law Minister is not of cabinet rank. The new Law Minister has been appointed at a crucial time just a year before the national election.
Kiren Rijiju served as Law Minister for less than a year and his term was said to be controversial as he openly criticised the Supreme Court over the collegium system of judges appointing judges.
In February, a Supreme Court bench expressed its displeasure over the delay in clearing judges appointments and transfers and called it a serious issue and warned of administrative and judicial actions but Rijiju brushed off the warning.
