Currently, women crew of Air India have been wearing sarees, which has been their uniform for the past 6 decades. The carrier is planning to change their attire to a more contemporary one by the month of November.
It was in 1962 that the female crew started wearing sarees that were sourced from Binny Mills. It was the idea of the late JRD Tata. Before 1962, the crew used to wear a skirt, jacket and a hat.
Designer Manish Malhotra has been roped in to do the uniforms and it looks like the uniform may be changed to churidars for women and suits for men. The colour of the uniforms however will remain the same as the airline’s new livery deep red, aubergine and gold.
Neither Manish Malhotra nor Air India commented on this proposed change in uniforms.
