The Central government opposed a plea in the Supreme Court to reconsider the validity of the 157 year old adultery law in the Indian Penal Code wherein only the married man and not the married woman is punishable for adultery.
Section 497 of the IPC will be heard by a five judge Constitution Bench to consider it’s legal validity. The Central government felt that dropping of adultery as an offence will erode the sanctity of marriage and destroy the fabric of society. As of now the section supports, safeguards and protects the institution of marriage.
