Aditi Gera, a 20 year old from Ujjain set up a one-to-one mentoring program for underprivileged girls and has bagged the prestigious Diana Award this year. Aditi was enraged to see how women have been positioned in society through the decades and hence decided to set up Empowerette.
The Diana Award was established in memory of the late Princess of Wales and is given to young humanitarians aged between 9 and 25 who work for social causes.
Empowerette was started in the year 2019 and consists of a team of seven girls aged 19 to 22. They reach out to help 60 girls from rural areas every year. They hold weekly sessions on skills like leadership development, confidence building, communication, career planning and emotional well being. They teach English on a regular basis through story telling, group interaction and vocabulary based group activities.
Their journey has been a difficult one but it has paid off. Aditi is happy that she has been honoured with this award as it is a recognition of the struggles they faced as a team and the efforts made to create a change.
