Popular yesteryear actor and DMDK founder-leader Vijayakanth died in Chennai at the age of 71. The party posted on its official X handle that Vijayakanth was admitted to a hospital and put on a ventilator after he complained of breathing problems.
He was suffering from ill health for quite some time and was admitted to MIOT Hospital in November and kept under observation for 14 days.
He was called ‘Captain’ and he had a successful career in films and acted in 154 films before his entry into politics.
He founded Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam in 2005. The party contested the elections in 2005 but managed to win only a meagre 10 percent of the total vote share. In 2011, the DMDK had an alliance with the AIADMK and won 26 constituencies. Vijayakanth served as the leader of the Opposition in the Tamil Nadu Assembly from 2011-2016. The party didn’t perform well in subsequent elections as Vijayakanth was facing health issues.
