Four siblings aged 13, 9 4 and an infant, who survived a small plane crash on May 1, survived for 40 days in the Columbian Amazon. They ate seeds, roots and plants that were edible to stay alive. They also managed to get hold of yucca flour from relief parcels that were dropped by search helicopters.
The plane crashed on May 1 and the pilot, the mother of the 4 children and one more adult lost their lives. The children were familiar with the jungle and their family was hopeful that they would survive.
More than 80 volunteers from indigenous territories in the departments of Caqueta, Putumayo, Meta and Amazinas joined around 100 soldiers in ”Operation Hope” It was said to be an unusual union of forces.
Authorities were able to locate the children after they heard the cries of the youngest child, an infant. They were provided with treatment by a pediatrician and neonatologist on board and later treated at the military hospital.
